Demian Rudel Rey (France-Argentina), composition, conductor and video
Demian Rudel Rey, native of Ciudad de Buenos Aires and currently living in Lyon, dedicates his production as a composer to instrumental, mixed, electroacoustic music as well as visual music. He is interested in timbres and the diversity of sound colors, but also in pulsation and rhythmic combinations which introduce energy and contrasts within his works. His compositions explore new extended techniques, in search of sounds which are part of corporeality and which require a total and virtuoso investment from the performer, building a bridge between visual language and sound.
For the development of his composition projects, he has received the support of Académie des Beaux-Arts (Villa Dufraine), Centre Nadia et Lili Boulanger, Fondation Salabert, SACEM, Beaumarchais-SACD, CNM, Ministère de la Culture (Commande de l’État), Mozarteum Argentino « Gisela Timmermann », IBERMÚSICAS, Fondation d'entreprise Société Générale C’est vous l’avenir, BECAR, FNArtes… The electrifying energy of his work has enabled him to obtain Prix Fondation Salabert [FR], Ivan Juritz Prize [GB], Frederic Mompou International Award [SP], Sond’Ar-te [PT], Musicworks [CA], Irino Prize [JP], Matera Intermedia [IT], CICEM [MC], Destellos Foundation [AR], Musique en roue libre [FR].
Regarding conducting, Demian is the musical director of the Ensemble Orbis, which is dedicated to contemporary music creation, and collaborates with numerous ensembles, soloists, and international festivals, including Q-Sion, Kollektiv Unruhe, Rosie Middleton, the Barcelona Modern Festival, the Voix Nouvelles Academy at Royaumont, Rainy Days, the DME Festival and B!ME.
Demian Rudel Rey obtains a DEM and a DNSPM in guitar and studies orchestral conducting in Argentina. After a BA in composition and a Masters in Arts combined at UNA [Argentina], he validates his Masters in instrumental composition and his Artist Diploma at the CNSMDL and his composition traineeship at KUG. Shaped by the courses and seminars of prestigious composers, he receives in particular the advice of Philippe Hurel, Franck Bedrossian, José Manuel López López, Yann Robin, Martín Matalon and Daniel D’Adamo.
His professional experiences as a composer have led him to work with ensembles such as the Court-Circuit, Proxima Centauri, EOC with Bruno Mantovani, quatuor TANA, Barcelona Modern, AuditivVokal Dresden, Ensemble Ars Nova, Reconsil, Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka, Atelier XX-21, Ensemble l’Imaginaire, CNSMDL’s orchestra, Ensemble Écoute, Emily Carr String Quartet, OCD, Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional Argentina, Quartetto Mitja, Q-SION, Ensamble Taller Sonoro, Nathan Plante, Olivia Martin ensemble of the Russian Centre for Contemporary Music in Moscow… Demian has received commissions and participated in festivals such as Festival Ensemble(s) (Paris), B!ME GRAME (Lyon), IPEA (Shanghai), ISCM (Vancouver), Bahía[in]sonora (Argentina), Muzički biennale Zagreb (Croatia), DME (Portugal), ENSEMS (Valencia), ArtHaus (Buenos Aires), Le Vivier / Semaine du Neuf (Montreal), Radio France (Paris), Music Current Festival (Dublin), Pavillon de la Sirène (Paris), Cervantes electroacústico (Buenos Aires), Mostra Sonora (Sueca), Festival Experimenta (Lima), BKA-Theater (Berlin), Festival MàD (Bordeaux), Festival Aspects des Musiques d’Aujourd’hui (Caen), ByPass (Toulouse), Rainy Days (Luxembourg), Theater im Delphi (Berlin)… Recently he premiered a chamber opera – “Qu’est-ce que l’amour ?” – with an ensemble he created in Lyon, a work for Françoise Kubler with Accroche, a collaboration with the OSN of Buenos Aires, JOGV, OCD and Marie-Bernadette Charrier.
Demian Rudel Rey, artistic director and co-founder of Ensemble Orbis, has been published by éditions Lacroch’ in Paris since 2026.
